Georges Gassita

Georges Gassita is a senior Gabonese legal expert specializing in environmental law, deeply passionate about nature and profoundly inspired by the legacy of his late elder brother, Professor Jean Noël Gassita, a distinguished pharmacologist and pharmacognosist, and an expert in Gabonese pharmacopoeia.

He has held key positions within several Gabonese ministries, including the Ministries of Forests, the Sea and Environment, as well as Transport and Logistics. He also served as Cabinet Attaché to the President of the Republic and as Environmental Inspector at the High Commission for the Environment and Living Environment.

In 2026, he coordinated the first International Conference on Iboga and Ibogaine in Gabon, positioning the country at the center of global discussions surrounding this sacred resource.

Following in the footsteps of his grandfather Jean Noël Gassita, a pioneer of Gabonese pharmacopoeia and founder of the Institute of Pharmacy and Traditional Medicine (IPHAMETRA), Georges Gassita cultivates a deep-rooted commitment to Gabon’s biodiversity. Professor Jean Noël, who passed away in 2022, was the curator of the Sibang Arboretum and a strong advocate for the symbiosis between modern science and ancestral wisdom.

Today, Georges Gassita actively advocates for reconnecting ancestral knowledge with modern science, particularly through frameworks such as the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing, and the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

He promotes a balance between the preservation of community rights, respect for traditions, and rigorous scientific research, avoiding any separation between innovation and cultural heritage. His writings, including those on the evolution of environmental law in Gabon, highlight legal standards strengthened by ecological urgency and international commitments.
